In memory of our fallen Brothers

Brothers and Sisters,

It is with profound sadness and disbelief to have to inform you all of the sudden and tragic passing of three fellow brothers of Division 747.

On this date, at approximately 1600, Train 92, enroute from Niagara Falls to Toronto derailed at Aldershot East fatally injuring Brother Ken Simmonds, Brother Peter Snarr and Brother Patrick Robinson. It will be some time before the actual cause of the derailment can be determined, but in the meantime we will all need the support of each and everyone of us to help try to make some sense of this heartbreaking event.

Brother Ken was an engineer with over 35 years service and considered by all who knew and worked with him as clear thinking, conscientious and above all, a consummate railroader. Likewise, Brother Peter exhibited a subtle professionalism and carried out his duties in a most cheerful and light hearted manner. He, too, was an engineer with almost 35 years service. Brother Patrick was new to the VIA family, arriving here in October of last year, but bringing with him 20 years experience with CN Rail and the Ottawa Valley Railway. We met only once, but those that were exposed to Pat on a more regular basis were unanimous in their praise for both his attitude and ability.

The extensive years of service mask the fact that these three brothers were taken from us far too soon and their absence will undoubtedly leave a void in our lives. But we are fortunate that we have our families and friends to comfort us at this time of grief. These men were brothers, fathers and sons and it is their families to whom our thoughts and prayers should now be directed. Whoever your God may be, pray to him in the name of our fallen comrades and especially those they have left behind.

Let this be a stark reminder of just how dangerous our chosen profession is and how fleeting life can be.

God Bless You All

Philip Hope
Local Chairman, Div. 747
