The Teamsters Offer Their Deepest Sympathies to the Families of the Victims
Ottawa, Ontario – The Teamsters
Union, which represents Via Rail’s locomotive engineers, would
like to express its sincere condolences to the families of the
workers who lost their lives in the derailment in Burlington,
Ontario this past weekend.
"Our thoughts go out to the families of the locomotive engineers
who died in this tragic accident. We would like to express our
sincere condolences and support to these families,” declared
Teamsters Canada President, Robert Bouvier, and Teamsters Canada
Rail Conference President, Rex Beatty.
Several people were also injured in the accident and Teamsters
Canada would like to wish everyone a speedy recovery.
According to Mr. Beatty, crossing over from one track to another
connecting track can be a normal and frequent procedure in
railway operations and it is too soon to speculate on the causes
of the accident. The inquiry currently underway will determine
the exact circumstances that led to the derailment.
"We will not comment on the hypotheses surrounding the
circumstances of the accident until the investigation has been
completed," added Mr. Beatty.
